The Fugl-Meyer assessment of the upper extremity: reliability, responsiveness and validity of the Danish version. Disabil Rehabil. (2017) 39:934–9. doi: 10.3109/09638288.2016.1163422

2016-07-01 · We developed the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) tool using Kinect (Microsoft, USA) and validated it for hemiplegic stroke patients. Forty-one patients with hemiplegic stroke were enrolled. Thirteen of 33 items were selected for upper extremity motor FMA. One occupational therapist assessed the motor FMA while recording upper extremity motion with Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity Assessment. The Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity Assessment (FMA) is a stroke-specific and performance-based impairment index. It is designed to assess five domains in patients with post-stroke hemiplegia consisting of: 1) motor functioning; 2) balance; 3) sensation; 4) joint range; and 5) joint pain (Fugl-Meyer, Jääskö, upper-limb motor impairment.

Fugl-Meyer upper extremity (FMUE) Scale scores is an index to assess the sensorimotor impairment in individuals who had stroke. The motor section score ranges from 0 to 66, and the score related to exteroceptive and proprioceptive sensitivity ranges from 0 to 12.

The Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) is one of the most used and recommended assessment scales of sensorimotor function in stroke. This study investigated the reliability of the scale when different therapists assessed the patient s performance at the same test session and when the assessment was performed by the same therapist but on 2 different occasions.

Scand J Rehab Med 1986;18: 155-157. The Fugl-Meyer Assessment is the gold standard to assess motor function of post-stroke hemiparesis (13, 14). The Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) has sound psychometric properties of reliability (15–20), validity (15–17, 20), and responsiveness (15, 16, 19, 20). 4.2 Evaluation of Upper Extremity There is a wide range of upper extremity rehabilitation outcomes measures which have been utilized. They can be categorized into broad categories listed below: 4.2.1 Upper Extremity Asessement and Outcome Measures Category Rationale Individual Assessment Tools Motor Function Assess gross motor Upper extremity motor function was measured by the Fugl-Meyer Assessment – Upper Extremity, and Stroke Also called a “brain attack” and happens when brain cells die because of inadequate blood flow. 20% of cases are a hemorrhage in the brain caused by a rupture or leakage from a blood vessel.

Motor and perceptual impairments in acute stroke patients: effects on self-care ability. Objective: The Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) is recommended for evaluation of sensorimotor impairment post stroke, but the item-level reliability of the scale is unknown. The study aims to determine intra- and inter-rater reliability of the FMA-UE at item-, subscale- and total score level in patients with early subacute stroke.

METHOD: The Main Outcome Measures: Fugl-Meyer Upper extremity scale, Modified Wolf Motor Function Test, University of Maryland Arm Questionnaire for Stroke, Motor cortex activation (fMRI).ResultsThe COMBO Objective: To investigate the dimensionality and construct validity of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment of the upper extremity by using Rasch analysis. Design: Secondary analysis of pooled data from 2 existing datasets: a randomized therapeutic exercise clinical trial and a cohort longitudinal study of stroke recovery.
